What I did was download the install disks from the unstable directory,
which I think is still the stuff from 2.1 (they wiw probably update it
when they get ready to release 2.2) and then in dselect point to apt and
then set the URL to the debian potato directory. Installing a new kernel
should not affect your package manager, just be sure NOT to install or
deinstall an packages that are related to kernel files.
