www.buy.com has a US Robotics internal with jumpers that works fine.

you must have an open ISA slots & understand I/O ports & IRQ

about $80 or $50 cheaper then an external

I would not try to use USB style modems.
all PCI modem are suspect
most ISA are suspect

internals are nice if you have a palm, serial mouse and modem == three serial
ports
externals are nice if you move the modem alot, like to watch LEDs or don't do
hardware
