In your home directory, touch .xinitrc if it doesn't exist (ls -a to
check). Open the file in your text editor of choice and enter exec
gnome-session or startkde depending on your choice.

It is possible this file exists already, if so check for either of the
above lines. Comment or uncomment as needed. While similar as the
previous suggestion, it doesn't require installing anything. Just an
alternative.
