Hey everyone,
It looks as if we are headed into our third meeting. Harry Souders and I went to the Silicon Valley Users Group meeting at Netscape in December and listened to Richard Stallman speak about the Free Software Foundation. Stallman spoke strongly about his beliefs about the GNU philosophy. I could see minds contemplating the workings of GNU. Much of Linux is based on GNU software and Stallman urged us to refer to Linux as GNU Linux rather than just Linux.
I thought about the idea of having speakers at our meetings. Bigger seems better, but I think in a way it detracts from what I see as the purpose behind having a user group. My goal is to have the group where we can share ideas between ourselves. Of course having more members means having more minds for thought, but you have to figure out how to break that large group back down into a small group. So, I am in no hurry to make the group big.
After the last meeting, Bill Mitchell forwarded me info on

I have been working more with Slackware. Today I just installed release 3.6 which was released sometime within the last month. I see a majority of people moving towards Red Hat and sometimes I wonder if I ought to go that way. My most recent challenge has been getting demand dialing configured. It has proven to be a challenge requiring research and understanding of PPP and diald. Slackware has a demand dial feature, but as far as I can see it does not work. I post a question to one of the comp.os.linux newsgroup and I had been informed that the PPP version on Slackware was not up to supporting the demand dialing feature in Slackware. The replier suggested diald. Diald has not been a trivial pursuit. I have found myself manipulating the /etc/ppp/options file in an attempt to make it work. I posted a request for a quick and dirty way to make it work, but no go. I had been informed there is reasonably fast and correct. So, onward with the diald journey.
I belong to Sacramento PC Users Group, and there is the possibility that we could become a part of their organization. I suppose I have been lazy about pursuing this. If you have arguments for either direction I would be interested in hearing them.
